Question

add monitors to device types

I cannot add active or passive monitors to device types.

In the Admin Console I go to the Configure drop down menu and select Device Types and edit any device type and go to active monitors or passive monitors and the Add, Remove or Edit options are greyed out.

I would love to add passive monitors to device types, that way I do not have to go to each device and add the monitors one by one.

Any ideas WUG community?

Matt,

This functionality has been moved into device roles.  The configuration of device roles can be found in the discovery console under the advanced menu.

Jason,

that barby style discovery console sucks. Be cool, admit it and many of us will tell you thank! Implement back device types the way as it was. If someone need discovery based on roles, so will it be, but let us configure actions, menus and monitors the way it was before. Look, I'v got a many different devices with only http open, but they all are a different types, they have a different URL's to browse. With that discovery all of my old switces are turned into telnet servers and so on. Please, return old style device types.

Andris,

Here are a few suggestions to possibly make discovery a little better for you.

  1. You have the ability to disable any of the roles.  So those roles that you know you will not use, simply disable them.
  2. User defined roles take higher priority than the defaults.
  3. If you do single device discovery (by right-clicking on a map and choosing new device), you have the option of forcing a role.
Device roles are much more powerful than the old device types.  With device roles you can now pre-define everything associated with a device, not just active and passive monitors.

Hello,

3. If you do single device discovery (by right-clicking on a map and choosing new device), you have the option of forcing a role.

I have tried to create semeliar with WhatsupGold 14.2.1 but without success:

Tools -> Discover Devices -> Advanced -> Device Role Setting
Added a Role Called "Xenapp 6.0 Server"

Which contains four performance monitors and nine Active monitors, without role identification since i want to add the deivce role manully when adding monitored objects.

Adding Device with forceing device role according to picture with or without credentials specified for SNMP and Windows.Adding Device.JPG

Will always result in non added monitors over Active monitors..
What am i doing wrong? Is it doable?

We want to manually add a device and use Templates/group id of the object that automaticly add specified monitors over that object.

Thanks,

I think you may have come across a bug with v14 as with the current release you are unable to have both options selected.  You either choose to add the device without scanning or force a device role.  Forcing a device role causes the scan to happen though, because the descovery engine will not add monitors to a device that will immediately fail.

Hello Jason,

Thanks for the fast answear.

Ok, so either way the define role and its active monitors wont be added?

I have tried both several times without success.

Scenario #1:
Add the device immediately without scanning
Result: Wont add device role when greyed, bugger. Since we want to add defined roles without waiting x min untill scan is completed and then restructure the monitors again by deleteing unwanted monitors.

Scenario #2:
Forcing a device role with Citrix Xenapp role selected:
Result: Telnet, HTTP as active monitors

Scenario #3:
Forcing a device role with Citrix Xenapp role selected:
Then run a rescan manually over Active monitors:
Result: 17 active monitors after x minutes.

Do you have any timeschedule when this buggfix will be released?
or any hotfix in shorter time maybe ?

Thanks,

The bug that I was referring to was with the interface allowing you to select both options, and this is not the way the current release behaves.

Do the monitors that you want applied to the device get applied after you run the rescan in scenario 3?

OfflineTony Haagen Tony Haagen said 12 months ago

ok, i can see you have WhatsupGold 15.x on the website.
Nope, the specified monitors wont be added after scenario 3, in fact it wont be added in any scenario at all.

Does the updates from WhatsUp Gold v14.4.1 fix the gui problem we discussed obove maybe?

Thanks, Tony

What type of monitors are you trying to apply to these devices?  If you add a single device and force a device role, the discovery engine will test the monitors against the device to see if they respond.  If a positive response is received then the monitor will be added, otherwise it will not.  Can you verify that the monitors work against the device?

Another option would be to simply use the Device Clone feature that came out with the v14.3 release.  Then you could configure 1 device exactly how you wanted it, and simply clone it whenever you needed to add another.  Then all you would have to change is the device name and IP address.

I am not sure which version the gui bug was fixed, but it has no effect on anything.
