WUG Database Local or Remote?

I'm learning about the new version of wug.

I was thinking about using a remote sql server (as in not installed on the wug box).  I'm wondering if local is better than remote.

My concern is that if the SQL server were to go down that WUG wouldn't work.  Does WUG require the DB to be available or is the config of machines local to the wug box and the SQL DB just a place to store data?

The advantage of having the SQL server seperate is resources. This splits the SQL resources with the polling engine resources and it allows more mpolls per minute without impact to the server.

Disadvantage is if it looses communication to the SQL server the polling tends to stop.

We use a SQL cluster for high availability and have not had any issues even during a failover event.

Once I read that I have to give the SA account or Administrator access to the SQL Server I decided it is best just to keep SQL on the local system.  I don't like the idea of having such a huge security risk.

David,

To answer your question concerning if wug will operate if the databse is not available, the answer is " wug will not work without the database " as the configuration for each device is in the database, including what to monitor.

If you choose to have the SQL server on the same machine as the wug server make sure the machine has enough RAM. The SQL server use lots of RAM, at minimum there should be 4GB of RAM installed.

Hi David - im not entirely sure what you mean about the admin accounts. All you need is to have the domain account used for running WUG have a login on your sql server mapped to the whatsup database. It may also need to have db_owner permissions.

If you do a clean install and specify a remote server, all permissions are configured automatically. There are no high security risks
