upgrading SQL 2005 express to 2008 R2 express whatsup DB

hey,
I am thinking to upgrade my WUG premium DB instance from SQL 2005 express to 2008 R2 express with advanced features to have ability of increasing database size to 10GB.
I have two concerns around that:
1. i've heard about serious performance degradation that could cause, as cpu and memory allocation for sql 2008 express has not been increased along with max db size. Has any one experieced that ?
2. Beside backing up full system and DB, is there any prereqs for upgrade that i should be aware of before running sql2008 r2 installation over existing 2005 instance?
thanks in advance for replies.

I recently updated my 2005 express instance to 2008 express then to 2008 R2 standard (had to for upgrade path requirements).
That said, I didn't encounter any issues during or after upgrade. I went to standard because I host numerous DBs on there (ELM,WUG,NetFlow...) and wanted to retain logs for an extended period of time and also standard VL pricing is not very expensive.
As for the performance issue, I suppose there could be some if you (1) host a lot of DBs on that server and (2) those DBs grow too big. But if you are hosting only the WUG DB, then you should be fine.
thanks for feedback Matt. In my case it's only WUG DB. No other instances running on it. However i am monitoring a lot of devices using active, performance monitors and need to retain data for some time.
Also, you've mentioned about upgrading to 2008 R2 via 2008 standard. I am surprised that it cannot be done directly!
Going from 2005 express, I had to update to 2008 express to 2008 R2 express then to Standard. Upgrade paths for express are limited to express editions. So going from 2005 express to 2005 standard = ok, but going from 2005 express to 2008 R2 standard = no go. It really wasn't that bad once I figured that out and in the end it worked out good with no issues.
Just a heads up Michal, the next version of WUG will ship with SQL Express 2008. Can't say too much more about it, but thought I would let you know that, incase it might have an effect on your decision to upgrade or not.
thanks for heads up Jason
